Equipment practices

Reefer readiness from pre-trip to delivery.

Equipment requirements vary by shipment. These operating practices support safe, clean and dependable refrigerated service.

Pre-trip readiness

The tractor, trailer and refrigeration unit should be inspected before accepting the load.

  • Confirm tires, lights, brakes and visible trailer condition
  • Check reefer operation, fuel level and active alarms
  • Report defects before the equipment is dispatched
Trailer condition and loading

A clean, odor-free trailer and unobstructed airflow help protect temperature-sensitive products.

  • Confirm sanitation and product compatibility
  • Follow authorized pre-cooling instructions
  • Keep air chutes and return-air paths clear during loading
In-transit monitoring

Drivers and operations should respond to temperature or equipment exceptions without delay.

  • Verify setpoint and operating mode against written instructions
  • Monitor reefer fuel and alarms
  • Limit unnecessary door openings and retain applicable records
Seals and cargo security

A documented chain of custody supports customer confidence and claim prevention.

  • Record the seal number accurately
  • Do not break or replace a seal without authorization
  • Use secure parking and report suspicious activity
Defects and maintenance

Safety-related and refrigeration defects must be reported and addressed through the proper maintenance process.

  • Complete required inspection reports
  • Document corrective action
  • Do not defer a condition that could affect safe operation or cargo integrity
